Country vs. Culture Essay -- Culture
America is a land based on freedom. This freedom is for every individual no matter their race or culture. Our society has surpassed many judgments and concerns that these demographic differences had created in the past. These differences had previously led to a great amount of cultural diversity through the act of discrimination among our nation. America, as a country, has now opened opportunities for individuals to work and interact in environments which were previously unsuited. USA Today surveyed a minority group in 2005 and found that over one third of corporate culture embraces diversity (El Nasser). They have opened doors to expand numbers that are now reaching around 41percent of minorities working at all levels of companies and 37percent of minorities at senior management (El Nasser). America has allowed cultural views of religion and other lifestyle beliefs and values to be an individualââ¬â¢s choice. They have also given a vast amount of freedom to different ethnic and religious groups throughout the past decades. A number of individuals along with various groups have taken advantage of these freedoms in unacceptable and illegal ways and given a lesser punishments for their actions. There have been cultural cases surrounding the acts of rapes and murders, for example, where a defendant was given 5 years of probation for murder and another individual was given 120 days in prison for murder (Phillips). These sentences can be compared to the 10 or more years charged for a ââ¬Ënormalââ¬â¢ murder case or the average 11.8 years in prison for an individual convicted of rape ("Title 18 Crimes and Criminal Procedure"). Training , Development & Performance with Motivation Essay examples --
Training , Development & Performance with Motivation Training includes all forms of planned learning experiences and activities designed to make positive changes to performance and Motivation. Development approaches the individual and employeesââ¬â¢ motivation from a different angle from that of training. While training is typically concerned with enabling the individual to contribute to meeting the objectives of the organization better, personal development is more concerned with enabling individuals to develop themselves in the way that best suits individual needs. The two, it is hoped, will come together. By helping individuals to develop themselves, they will be more inclined and better able to contribute to helping the organization meet its objectives. It is important to stress that the process of linking performance and training and development the process of appraisal and other forms of evaluation should be closely linked to training and development. If the organizations to achieve its objectives, it is essential to train and develop its people so they are best able to support the organization in working towards objectives. At the same time the individual needs to have the opportunity to be able to communicate employeesââ¬â¢ own personal development needs to the organization through appraisal or personal development planning schemes. The Financial and non-financial can be no doubt that financial reward is perhaps the most significant factor in pe...
Automobiles of Tomorrow Essay -- Automobiles
As America moves into the next generation of vehicular travel, we must keep in mind how resources will be used to develop these very things. Will we continue to consume more so than is necessary? Or will our government, in partnership with research and development firms, develop a comprehensive plan to engineer cars that act in stewardship of the environment. As it stands, the Environmental Protection Agency has enacted policies and regulations which move toward just that; reform which targets car companies in an effort to curb their wasteful tactics and implement standards that will ensure consumers pay less at the pump and get more out of their car (Environmental Protection Agency, www.epa.gov/fueleconomy). Nevertheless, we must look at both sides of the argument when analyzing the particulars of such a concept; in so far as, if we choose to reform the way business is done in America, how do we go about doing it to include the need for companies to ensure that their respective pro ducts do more to help the environment than harm it. When analyzing the need to regulate the means in which a company designs and engineers their vehicles, we must first assess governmental efforts in regards to establishing particular fuel consumption norms. Thus, we analyze the Environmental Protection Agency and any methods used to determine fuel efficiency standards that are at a level which ensures companies have a viable opportunity to meet said standards. 2011 witnessed the introduction of the revamped EPAââ¬â¢s labeling system as a means of promoting fuel efficiency standards to customers in car dealerships (Why is Fuel Economy Important, www.fueleconomy.gov). Within the changes came inclusions of detailed information regarding the vehiclesââ¬â¢ fuel... ...cuments 1. Claim of Fact Essay Essay
With the biggest GDP, prestigious universities, and a multitude of successful entrepreneurs, the United States has always been considered one of the leading countries in the world. Unfortunately, with other countries outdoing the United States in education, this notion is quickly changing. In recent years, students from other countries have been surpassing the United States academically and have proven that they are the future of the world. Researchers have found many differences in the school systems in foreign countries compared to those in the United States; however, the main reasons America is being trumped by students in other countries are because of the lack of parental support at home and the use of technology in schools. With test scores to prove this change in academic hierarchy, it has become obvious that other countries are outperforming the United States. Each country was compared and ranked based on scores of the 2011 Progress in International Reading Literacy Study and the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study. Multiple countries, such as Hong Kong, Russia, and Finland, scored above the United States in reading, math, and science. The United States is still one of the top thirteen educational systems in the world; however, they are lagging behind and are being consistently outranked (Khazan). One reason for this differentiation in test scores is the ways in which school systems are set up. For example, in Finland, the country with the ââ¬Å"best performing education system,â⬠ââ¬Å"schools assign less homework and engage children in more creative play,â⬠which is the opposite of schools in America (Dillon). At the rate that these countries are exceeding, with student s ahead of American students by one whole school year, those from places such as Hong Kong, China, and Finland will soon be the top entrepreneurs and leaders of the world. One of the main reasons that students in other countries are more successful academically is because of parent involvement. According to the University of Michigan, ââ¬Å"parental involvement is a critical component to a childââ¬â¢s educational experienceâ⬠and ââ¬Å"it is proven that greater involvement in a childââ¬â¢s education can foster more positive attitudes toward school, can improve homework habits, increase academic success and can reduce dropoutà ratesâ⬠(ââ¬Å"Comparing). Parents in other countries, such as China, ensure that their children understand and complete their homework, while parents in the United States play a more passive role. This is because many parents in the United States are among the working class and not present when their children return from school. Parent involvement helps children succeed in school, leading them to continue on to college. Today, ââ¬Å"the odds that a young person in the U.S. will be in higher education if his or her parents do not have an upper secondary education are just 29%â⬠(LaRock). This proves that parents in other countries are more supportive of higher education and encourage their children to attend even if they did not have the chance. In order to ensure that the United States can redeem itself and once again be a top nation academically, American parents need to be more involved with their children. Another reason that the United States is being surpassed is because of their lack of use of technology in the classroom. As a nation, America should be placing the newest technology in schools in order to ensure that children are keeping up with the technological advances of the world and progressing at the same or higher pace than other students. As Dr. Michael Mills states, ââ¬Å"ââ¬Ëapart from the engagement aspect of using technology, students must master the digital literacy skills necessary to thrive in todayââ¬â¢s society and workplaceââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (Lawrence). As technology quickly becomes the basis of the world, children need to be familiar with up-to-date versions. This will ensure that they can compete with other nations when entering the workforce. Schools in countries such as China agree with this idea and ââ¬Å"[have] moved far ahead of almost every country in the world on measures of integrating technology into academic curriculum.â⬠Many American parents believe that if their children are going to use advanced technology, they are more likely to use it at home than in school (Lawrence). With these ideas in mind, American parents are allowing their children to fall behind the rest of the nation; thus, they are contributing to the success of students in other countries. Although the United States needs to spend money on placing the latest technology in schools, there are valid reasons as to why they cannot do this. American school systems are based on standardized testing, which isà what they are forced to spend a majority of their budget on (Lawrence). Also, parents in the United States are not able to be home for their children as often because they are busy at work. Many would agree that this high number of working class parents is a key component to Americaââ¬â¢s success. However, these are not valid reasons as to why children in America should be allowed to slip so far behind those in other countries. As stated by the University of Michigan, ââ¬Å"mothers in eastern Asian countries for example, will actually attend school in order to take notes for their children when they are ill and unable to attend themselves,â⬠so why canââ¬â¢t mothers in the United States make at least half the effort? (ââ¬Å"Comparing). If society continues to act this way, the future of the world will no longer be in the hands of Americans. With the lack of parental support in the United States and advanced technology in the classroom, America is quickly being outshined. Compared to other countries, their academics are suffering. In order to ensure that the United States remains a leading country in the future, these two aspects need to be changed. If nothing is done, the leaders of tomorrow will not be from the United States, but children who now live in countries such as China or Finland. Marketing and Gillette
1. How is the Gillette Series being positioned with respect to (a) competitors, (b) the target market, (c) the product class, (d) price and quality? What other positioning possibilities are there? a. The Gillette Series is positioned as premium to the competition. b. Using the slogan, ââ¬Å"The Best a Man can Getâ⬠appeals to the target market not because it is the most convenient or the most price effective, but because of the value that is added to products by building on the popularity of sensor. c. The Gillette Series is positioned as differentiated due to functional attributes through innovation to the product class. . These products are priced at a premium at an index of 10 to 20 percent higher than competition. Many other positioning possibilities are available for Gillette. This brand can position the myriad of products it has separately, or treat itself as a master Brand. The positioning should be the same as the other series of menââ¬â¢s grooming products if Gillet te positions itself as one Brand. However, if it breaks the brand into classes, then there will be a shaving line, a deodorant line, an aftershave line. 2. Is Gillette making the best use of the brand equity that has been created with Sensor?Sensor has been a huge success for Gillette. It makes sense to use the energy of that to tie into the other products offered. The tagline of ââ¬Å"The best a man can get,â⬠is a solid platform for this brand. Since the equity was established for the slogan used and not just Sensor, Gillette is making good use of the equity, since the Sensor is viewed as a product from Gillette, and one that works very well according to consumer response. 3 What strategies do you propose to Gillette? Address the entire marketing mix.Conceivably, a staggered approach may work better for Gillette. Releasing the products at different times as opposed to all at one time would give consumers time to build a prevailing purpose to have faith in a product. The equi ty of sensor may be diluted with too many different products. I would suggest to first scale not only consumer reaction to product quality, but to gauge consumer understanding of the brand. If the Brand is best known for a smooth comfortable shaving razor, then it would be wise to stagger other products based on customer review. Request for funding of a community development project Essay
We at the Ottawa Foundation, Toledo Ohio would like to apply for the annual grant for financing a short term project of upgrading the community park located at the heart of the city. We are primarily a nonprofit catholic organization with strength of 50 active volunteers and we work in collaboration with local businesses and other volunteer organization such as Habitat for humanity , University of Toledo social service group etc. Our primary objective is to drive community development programs using the help of local community members and local neighborhoods. Though we are well funded by local business groups, the current economic slowdown has compelled us to search for alternative funding sources to fuel our projects. As Collins Foundation exists to improve and give greater expression to the religious, educational, cultural, and scientific endeavors in the state to assist in improving the quality of life in the state we thought that there could be no better organization that could understand and support our objectives towards the final goal of community development. So we would like to submit a detailed proposal of our plans and cost analysis to your organization for approval of a grant amount of approximately 7000 USD. We would appreciate your prompt response and would be highly obliged if we are supported in this endeavor. Thanking you, Regards, Christy Grandowics, CEO- Ottawa Foundation, Toledo, Ohio The Ottawa Foundation is a nonprofit catholic community which unites 20 civic organization, businesses and institutions to improve the areas in and around Toledo, Ohio. The major achievements accomplished in the past years include upgrade of Play pens at various local government day care centers, such as Apple tree Foundation run by University of Toledo, Sunshine at Toledo Childrenââ¬â¢s hospital. We are under the Tax Exemption Act#22 , Toledo Taxation Policy. The current projectââ¬â¢s objective is primarily to upgrade the Wildwood metro park located at the south east part of the city. The trail starts from University of Toledo Campus and continues for about 30 miles to the crossing of Central and Reynolds. The service area includes 28 neighborhoods, with a total population of over 35,000. The neighborhoods include both multi- and single-family housing. Wild wood Park has seen extensive use by youth and adult sports leagues, trail advocates, dog trainers and general community park users. The proposed project will improve access and durability of the park, enhance patron safety, upgrade critical facilities such as childrenââ¬â¢s playground and shelter, and provide a buffer to the adjacent neighborhood. It also serves as a natural habitat for deer, rabbits and various seasonal birds and smaller animals. The park also includes different varieties of wood which are donated annually to ââ¬Å"Small Homes & Shelterâ⬠a foundation serving the North West Ohio by providing shelters for homeless during the winter months. This project would involve the redevelopment and renovation of 5 acres of the existing 30-acre David Douglas Park in central Vancouver. Renovations will include the re-alignment of the main entry drive and expansion of parking facilities, re-alignment of trail segments, and installation of new play equipment, picnic shelter, vegetative screening, invisible dog fencing and support facilities such as night patrol for enhanced security measures. Though Ottawa Foundation is a nonprofit organization and is being supported by various flourishing local businessmen, and the state government the current economic recession has led to cost cutting of funds and so we would need some financial help urgently to fuel this project. As Wildwood Metro Park has maximum footfall during the months of April-October we would like to start the renovation during the months of October till mid December before the onset of heavy snowfall. Currently we are looking for nonprofit construction firms and student bodies like ââ¬Å"Habitat for Humanityâ⬠to get the construction work done at a minimum cost to us. The blue print for this project is currently being looked upon by Dr Jim Weiss who serves as a faculty in the civil engineering department of University of Toledo and had served in various firms prior to his appointment as a faculty member and is experienced in transportation and construction engineering. He has his team of five graduate students who have agreed to volunteer for this current project development.
